Transforming Underutilised Outdoor Spaces

Although the kindergarten had generous outdoor space, the front yard lacked street appeal and the steep rear yard offered limited play value.

The redevelopment reimagined both areas to better support children’s learning and play. The front yard was transformed into an inviting, easy-to-maintain space featuring cubby play, a bike track and a raised sandpit modified with a ramp for easy access. Designed to encourage imaginative role-play and active movement, the space supports the development of social skills through shared play and collaborative experiences.

In the rear yard, the focus shifted to sensory exploration and connection with nature. The steep site was carefully terraced to work around existing play equipment to improve functionality, creating usable levels and intimate nooks for different play zones. New features include water play areas, a shaded deck for quiet and group activities, and a growing patch where children can engage in hands-on gardening experiences.

To ensure the centre could continue operating throughout construction, the works were carefully staged. While one yard was being redeveloped, the other remained available for daily use allowing children and staff to have access to a safe and functional outdoor environment at all times.
