At Charles Sturt University's Thurgoona campus, a once barren area between the award-winning C.D. Blake Lecture Theatre and the main P2 carpark has been transformed into a functional, water-sensitive landscape that reflects the campus's strong sustainability ethos.

ECS provided full design and construct services, developing and delivering a solution that met the university's brief for a low-water, rainfall-reliant landscape with year-round interest, integrated vehicle barriers, habitat potential, and a formal pedestrian connection.

The completed project features a shallow bio-retention basin that captures and filters stormwater, creating ephemeral wetland conditions suitable for Sloane's Froglet and other native species. A mix of local endemic species and other drought-tolerant Australian native planting ensures minimal maintenance while enhancing biodiversity. Natural boulders and custom fabricated weathered steel elements provide subtle vehicle protection, and a new pathway strengthens connectivity between the carpark and lecture theatre.

The result is a resilient, sustainable landscape that complements the campus's award-winning rammed earth architecture and reinforces CSU's commitment to environmentally sensitive design.
